A Unique Blend of Art and Nature

Throughout this three-hour annual event, the serene paths and hidden corners of the Seattle Japanese Garden come alive with dancers and musicians positioned in unexpected spots. As you stroll through the garden, you’ll encounter these performers in motion—responding to the garden’s sights, sounds, textures, and fragrances with their own spontaneous, artful interpretations.

Each interaction offers a moment of discovery, transforming the garden into a living, breathing stage where art and nature intertwine.

About Wandering & Wondering

Wandering & Wondering is directed by Joan Laage (also known as Kogut Butoh), a renowned artist and pioneer in Butoh dance. Rooted in Japanese avant-garde performance traditions, Butoh emphasizes a deep sensitivity to surroundings and an organic connection to the body and space.

During this event, performers engage in site-specific improvisations—their movements and sounds guided by the natural elements around them. The result is an intimate, meditative experience that encourages guests to see the garden through fresh eyes and a heightened sense of awareness.
